Manufacturing a high-quality stainless steel crepe pan handle involves precision and attention to detail:
- Material Selection & Cutting: High-grade equivalent stainless steel sheet or steel wire is selected. Blanks are precisely cut to the required shape and size using laser cutting, water jets, or stamping.
- Forming: The flat blanks undergo forming processes:
- Stamping/Pressing: Used to create the basic handle profile, contours, and any bends.
- Rolling/Forging (Optional): For hollow handles or specific shapes, rolling or forging techniques might be employed to shape the metal and create internal cavities for insulation.
- Heat Shield Fabrication: Separate pieces for heat shields are cut and formed, often requiring more complex bends.
- Edge Smoothing & Surface Finishing: All cut edges are meticulously deburred and polished smooth to eliminate sharpness. The entire handle surface undergoes polishing – typically to a brushed satin finish (hiding scratches well) or sometimes a high polish. This enhances aesthetics, hygiene, and feel.
- Attachment Point Preparation: The end of the handle tang that will connect to the pan is precisely machined or formed to ensure a perfect fit against the pan wall.
- Riveting: This is the critical step:
- The stainless steel pot handle tang is aligned precisely with the pre-drilled holes in the pan wall.
- High-strength stainless steel rivets are inserted.
- Using significant pressure (often cold riveting or specialized hydraulic presses), the rivets are mechanically deformed ("bucked") on the inside of the pan, creating a permanent, flush, and incredibly strong connection. Insulating washers may be incorporated here.
